In a world where life is often devalued, God’s Word remains a steadfast beacon of truth, calling us to cherish, protect, and defend the most vulnerable among us—the preborn. As followers of Christ, we are called not only to affirm the sanctity of life but also to offer love and support to all, including mothers facing unplanned pregnancies.
God’s Design for Life
Scripture is clear: life begins in the womb, and every child is fearfully and wonderfully made by our Creator. Psalm 139:13-14 proclaims:
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
From the moment of conception, God has a plan and purpose for each life. Jeremiah 1:5 echoes states this truth:
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart."
When we defend life, we align ourselves, our thinking, with God’s divine design, speaking and standing up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8).
Jesus’ Heart for Mothers in Crisis
Christ’s ministry was filled with compassion for the brokenhearted. He extended grace to the weary and provided hope to those in distress. As His followers, we are called to do the same. One amazing opportunity is offering compassionate, tangible support to women and men navigating unplanned pregnancies.
James 1:27 reminds us of our duty:
"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."
A mother facing an unplanned pregnancy is often overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. She may feel abandoned, ashamed, and often pressured to make a decision that goes against her values. As the body of Christ, we have the opportunity to walk alongside her, providing emotional, spiritual, and material support that affirms both her life and the life of her child. You can be those hands holding up the prophet’s arms by being involved with and supporting the work at WELS Lutherans for Life.
The Church’s Role in Defending Life
The early church was known for rescuing abandoned infants and caring for the vulnerable. Today, we are inspired by them to continue in Christ-like love, that mission by:
- Praying for moms and babies – Lifting up women facing an unplanned pregnancy and asking that God protect their babies.
- Providing resources and support – Offering counseling, parenting classes, and practical assistance (including help in applying for assistance programs, access to our second-hand store, and limited physical assistance directly from our office).
- Sharing the Truth in love – in our churches and in our neighborhoods—educating our communities on the value of life and God’s plan for families.
- Giving generously – to your church and actively and financially supporting life-affirming ministries serving women in need.
A Call to Action
Defending life is not just a political or cultural issue—it is a Biblical mandate. Every heartbeat is precious to God, and every mother needs to know she is not alone. We, as Christians, have the privilege of being the hands and feet of Jesus, offering hope, love, and encouragement to those in crisis.
